Endodontic FAQ
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected pulp, or soft tissue, from the inside of a tooth. The goal of root canal treatment is to save your natural tooth.
Concern about taking X-rays?
Digital imaging has greatly reduced radiation exposure and allows the specialist to evaluate, diagnose, and treat properly.
Does having root canal treatment hurt? Is pain expected after?
The procedure is completed under local anesthesia, and the procedure itself will not be uncomfortable. Soreness for 3-5 days after is expected, which can be managed with OTC analgesics. Antibiotics are often not needed and only indicated in certain situations.
What happens after treatment?
Often, a root canal treated tooth should be restored with a permanent filling and crown. The posterior, or back teeth, often take an increased amount of force. Root canal treated teeth can fail at a 6x high rate without a crown protecting it! It is important to schedule an appointment with your general dentist after for a permanent filling and/or crown, depending on the tooth that was treated.
